Every state in the Union looks to the federal government for help at one point or another — but some do it less often than others.
To figure out the states that rely the least on Washington, D.C., WalletHub focused on two key factors, how dependent state residents are on the feds, and how dependent their state governments are.
They evaluated these categories to rank states in both those areas (with No. 1 being the most dependent and No. 50 the least) and from there they calculated a state’s weighted average across all metrics to determine its overall score (scores closer to 100 indicate a higher degree of dependence).
Scroll through the ranking to see which states were in the bottom 20 and how they fared.
