The relationship between individual state governments and the federal government is central to the political structure of the U.S. — and one of the key measures of that relationship is how much the states look to Washington for resources for themselves and for their citizens.

To figure out the states that rely the most on the federal government, WalletHub focused on two key factors, how dependent state residents are on the feds, and how dependent their state governments are.

They evaluated these categories to rank states in both those areas (with No. 1 being the most dependent and No. 50 the least) and from there they calculated a state’s weighted average across all metrics to determine its overall score (scores closer to 100 indicate a higher degree of dependence).

Scroll through the ranking to see which states were in the top 20 and how they fared.
