US employment: The economy is estimated to have added 180,000 jobs in April, down from the 236,000 jobs added in March, according to economists polled by Refinitiv. The unemployment rate is expected to tick up to 3.6 per cent in March from a half-century low of 3.5 per cent.
Warner Bros Discovery: Investors will be keen to learn more about the entertainment group’s new streaming service, Max, and any comments it has on how the writers’ strike will affect its business.
Other companies: Cinema chain AMC Entertainment, insurance company Cigna, and exchange operator CBOE report before the opening bell.
Canada employment: The economy is forecast to have added 20,000 jobs last month, down from 34,700 jobs in March, and the unemployment rate is expected to have ticked up 0.1 percentage point to 5.1 per cent.
Berkshire Hathaway: Warren Buffett will offer his thoughts on the economy and the US banking sector when his sprawling investment company holds its annual meeting on Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska, and reports first-quarter results.
