Reflections from a conference host

Reflections from a conference host
ShareShareShareShareShare

Denver played host to the AGA Professional Development Training (PDT) in 2024, marking the first time the city had the honor of hosting this prestigious event in many years. I volunteered as a conference host to delve into the human aspect of government accounting. I wanted to meet the people in the field doing the hard work of government financial management every day.

The conference was a significant undertaking, with organizers and volunteers working long, 12-hour days over five days to ensure everything ran smoothly. Thousands of participants flooded into Denver, making it one of the highest attended PDTs in history. The energy and enthusiasm were palpable as attendees engaged in various sessions and activities throughout the event

It was quickly evident that the government employees are not only hardworking but also highly educated. Many of the professionals I met held advanced degrees, and certifications including CGFM (certified government financial manager), CPA and CIA (certified internal auditor). Their dedication to their roles was inspiring, as they volunteered their time to share their knowledge and experiences with others. These individuals have often been in their positions for many years, yet they remain committed to ongoing education to stay current and competent in their fields. They seldom receive the recognition they deserve.

The conference topics were diverse and timely, covering the integration of artificial intelligence in government operations and addressing hiring challenges within the public sector. A key theme was the need to attract younger generations to government roles, focusing on the rewarding aspects of public service careers. The AGA PDT 2024 schedule features various sessions for government financial professionals, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence in Government: Exploring AI applications and ethical considerations;
  • Workforce Challenges: Addressing hiring and retention in the public sector;
  • Financial Systems Modernization: Updating governmental financial systems; and,
  • Fraud Management: Techniques for detecting and preventing fraud.

Despite their dedication, these professionals face numerous challenges. Constantly changing laws and pronouncements require them to continually adapt and update their knowledge and skills. Additionally, resources at the state and local levels are dwindling, which places additional strain on their ability to perform their duties effectively. This reality was underscored by the noticeably lower attendance of state and local government employees at the conference.
The AGA PDT 2024 highlighted both the strengths and challenges of government professionals. Their commitment to excellence and continuous learning was evident, even as they navigate an increasingly complex and resource-constrained environment. The conference not only provided a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices but also underscored the urgent need to support these dedicated individuals in their efforts to serve the public effectively.

While my organization, Truth in Accounting, strives to make government reporting more transparent and responsible, we also must recognize the thousands of public servants who are doing their best to perform their jobs in complicated circumstances. We appreciate you.
