Trump proposes tax credit for caregivers
ShareShareShareShareShare

Former President Donald Trump called for a tax break for caregivers, the latest in a series announced by the Republican nominee with the election only about a week away.

“I’m announcing a new policy today that I will support a tax credit for family caregivers who take care of a parent or a loved one,” Trump said during a rally Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York, according to CNN. “It’s about time that they were recognized, right? They add so much to our country and are never spoken of, ever, ever, ever, but they’re going to be spoken of now.”

Vice President Kamala Harris has called for expanding Medicare to help caregivers with a plan she calls Medicare at Home.

Trump did not go into details on the tax credit, but in recent months he has announced a number of tax breaks, including for interest payments when purchasing automobiles from U.S. automakers. He has also called for exempting taxes on tip income, overtime income, Social Security income, and income for the police, firefighters, active duty military and veterans. In addition, he has called for extending the expiring provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and lowering the corporate tax rate even further, but he has also called for lifting the TCJA’s $10,000 so-called SALT cap on state and local tax deductions. Accountants are divided on the election, according to research by Accounting Today and Arizent, although a majority appear to be leaning toward Trump.
