Peter Cappelli, an HR thought leader, researcher and professor at The Wharton School, was recognized this week by the Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) with the organization’s Industry Legend Award.

Peter Cappelli

According to i4cp, Cappelli earned the award for his decades of “groundbreaking work in workforce strategy, talent management and HR innovation.” Cappelli is the George W. Taylor professor of management at Wharton and director of its Center for Human Resources.

“Few individuals have had such a profound impact on the world of HR and talent strategy as Peter Cappelli,” said Kevin Oakes, CEO and co-founder of i4cp. “His work has shaped the way organizations think about the future of work.”

Cappelli is also a longtime columnist for HR Executive, sharing his insights each month on topics ranging recently from skills-based hiring to DEI and layoffs. His most recent piece addresses the problems he sees with the “DOGE approach.”

The other awards recognized i4cp members—individual leaders and innovators within HR and organizations pushing ahead with what i4cp describes as next practices. These strategies advance organizations with their “measurable impact on business performance.”

The Next Practice Awards went to:

  • Hewlett Packard Enterprise for a performance management transformation that improved company results;
  • Zillow Group for using AI to boost performance and drive the future of work; and
  • Mattress Firm for its “Attract, Grow, Mobilize & Inspire” talent program to improve retention and organizational results.

“The organizations receiving Next Practice Awards are at the forefront of innovation in HR,” said Carrie Bevis, i4cp Managing Director of Community & Partnerships. “We are proud to recognize their leadership and commitment to advancing workforce practices that elevate both employees and business outcomes.”

The member award winners were:

  • Lisa Bryant of Dow, CHRO of the year;
  • Lisa Ashworth of Pepsi, board member of the year;
  • Hewlett Packard Enterprise, member of the year;
  • Lumen Technologies, new member of the year;
  • Manulife Financial, high-performing member of the year;
  • Symetra, community member of the year; and

The winners were recognized Wednesday during the i4cp annual Next Practices Now conference in Arizona.
