How tech companies can use purpose to promote transformation
ShareShareShareShareShare

In the fast-evolving world of tech, where innovation is often measured in data and disruption, NTT Data Asia-Pacific CEO John Lombard believes that real transformation lies in purpose-driven leadership. At the helm of one of the world’s largest IT and business services firms, Lombard is championing a vision where technology does not just solve problems. It uplifts communities, advances sustainability and redefines inclusive leadership.

As the co-founder of the #HeForShe initiative, Lombard brings a values-led perspective to the boardroom and beyond. His experience in shaping gender equality movements has informed how NTT Data approaches diversity in tech, a sector still grappling with the underrepresentation of women.

“My involvement with #HeForShe has reinforced my belief that inclusive leadership and equal opportunities are fundamental to progress,” Lombard told HRM Asia. “The tech industry has long struggled with inclusion, and this must be addressed.”

This belief is reflected in NTT Data’s bold initiative across Asia-Pacific. The organization sponsors the Women of the Future Awards in Southeast Asia, which recognize and empower female leaders in tech. In Cambodia, NTT Data backs Sisters of Code, offering girls the chance to visit leading tech companies in Singapore and explore what it means to build a career in tech.

“We have implemented a comprehensive strategy that fosters a workplace where everyone belongs, feels valued and can thrive as their authentic selves,” Lombard said. “Inclusion in leadership leads to better outcomes because of the distinct problem-solving capabilities it brings to the table.”

It is not just about representation. For Lombard, it is also about accessibility. Through its proprietary generative AI technology, Tsuzumi, and a dedicated large language model, NTT Data is working to democratize access to AI tools. “Technology is not just a tool for innovation, it is also a force for empowerment and equity,” he said. Lombard also cited NTT Data’s Global Gen AI Report, which highlighted the importance of inclusive AI training to ensure all genders benefit from the rapid growth of AI.

Driving growth without compromising culture

Balancing high-velocity growth with a strong, inclusive corporate culture is no small feat. But for Lombard, business success is inseparable from the organisation’s social mission.

“We recognize that our growth is inextricably linked to our core values,” he said. “Our commitment to using ‘technology for good’ means being accountable for our actions and demonstrating empathy toward our people and the communities we serve.”

John Lombard, CEO of NTT Data Asia-Pacific

NTT Data’s impact ambition is structured around three core themes—planet, economy and community. Its Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) technology, for instance, enhances energy efficiency by a factor of 100, Lombard said, significantly reducing power consumption in AI operations. In the economy, AI-driven automation is optimizing operations across industries, while its AI-enhanced smart grid solutions help manage energy more effectively.

The organization also is investing in AI-powered accessibility tools that break down language barriers and improve access to information. “We sponsor programs within communities to promote diversity and inclusion in tech companies,” Lombard said.

NTT Data’s recognition by the Top Employers Institute as a 2025 Global Top Employer is a testament to how people-centric policies can drive business growth, he said.

The company is also investing heavily—$3 billion annually—in AI-ready infrastructure, pioneering new cooling technologies for sustainable AI growth and strengthening its cloud capabilities through strategic acquisitions like Niveus Solutions. These moves aim to support the growing demand for AI insights and cloud modernization, particularly across Asia-Pacific.

“The pandemic has revolutionised our lives and workstyles,” Lombard said. “With remote work now commonplace, secure access to data anywhere, anytime, has become crucial.”

Lessons for leaders: Adaptability, purpose and empathy

Reflecting on his extensive career, Lombard offered three key lessons for tech leaders striving for both business success and social good.

“Firstly, effective tech leadership demands adaptability and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone,” he said. His own experience in his first Asia-Pacific assignment taught him “the importance of developing strategic and tactical insights to drive growth in fast-paced environments.”

Secondly, Lombard believes that “business success and social good are not mutually exclusive.” He added, “Organizations thrive when they are purpose-driven, and aligning innovation with societal impact creates a foundation for sustainable growth. Cultivating diverse tech perspectives within a transparent, fair, and accountable framework unlocks better decision-making and fuels innovation.”

Finally, Lombard underscored the power of empathy. “I’ve seen the impact of empathy in leadership and innovation,” he said. “Understanding the needs of our people and stakeholders increases overall satisfaction, trust and loyalty, which results in improved financial performance and creates socially responsible outcomes, all essential for long-term success.”

For Lombard, the future of technology is not just about advancing capabilities but about ensuring those advancements serve humanity. As he put it, “Effective leaders prioritize purpose and keep people at the forefront of technological advancements. Innovation thrives in a fostering and inclusive environment, and when technology serves human needs, it creates enduring value.”
