PPE Medpro, the medical supplier with links to Conservative peer Baroness Michelle Mone, breached a state contract by providing unsafe equipment during the Covid-19 pandemic, the High Court in London has found.
The Department of Health and Social Care in 2022 sued PPE Medpro, which had been recommended for government contracts by Mone, alleging a breach of contract.
The DHSC sought repayment of £122mn for the gowns, along with costs incurred as part of the case.
This year the case went to trial, during which the company denied the claims against it.
PPE Medpro won its contract during the pandemic via the then Conservative government’s contentious “VIP lane”, which fast-tracked potential equipment suppliers with links to politicians or government officials.
A notice to appoint an administrator to the company, owned by a consortium led by Mone’s husband Doug Barrowman, was filed this week ahead of the judgment.
