Nevada implements CPA licensure changes

The Nevada legislature passed and implemented a regulation creating an additional pathway to CPA licensure, effective as of Feb. 27, 2026.

The regulation, presented by the Nevada Board of Accountancy and supported by the Nevada Society of CPAs, creates a third option for licensure: a bachelor’s degree, two years of experience, and passing the CPA exam.

SB437, which passed unanimously during the 2025 legislative session, moved licensing requirements from statute to regulation — meaning this change did not require approval from the governor.

“We feel this additional pathway gives more options to candidates and lets them align their career and licensing journey with their individual situation,” Viki Windfeldt, executive director of the Nevada Board of Accountancy, said in a statement.

“The new regulation will remove barriers to licensure and further unify the CPA profession,” NVCPA CEO Anna Durst said in a statement.

Nevada is the latest of roughly 30 other states that have passed similar legislation as part of an ongoing effort to address the CPA talent shortage.
