Beyoncé does not talk much, so when she talks, people listen, and that is why Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is a big deal.
For almost three decades, Beyoncé has built her career, brick by brick, through unrelenting grit and a commitment to mastering her craft. In her recently-released film, the “Break My Soul” singer peels back the layers to reveal to fans the tiers of acute preparation that went into The Renaissance World Tour. The film is not only apologetic in its form; it is a celebration of a global mega superstar who knows that, in her own words, has nothing left to prove because she has paid her dues.
Like most previous Beyoncé documentaries, this recent film underscores the doggedness that goes into her excellence, but it also gives viewers an intimate front-row seat into the singer’s dedication to her craft — and her ironclad work ethic.
In many ways, the Houston native shows how these elements have contributed to her impressive career evolution over the years, but she doesn’t stop there.
While the film captures long, gritty, grueling hours of rehearsals coupled with an unrelenting dedication to the show, the singer further digs beyond the surface and broaches the topic of her Blackness. In the documentary, Beyoncé shares that in spite of reaching the highest echelons of success, she, too, like many Black women, contends with the challenge of feeling seen and heard. For Black women in positions of power, leadership can seem like a never-ending slippery slope of grappling with the self-doubt that often mirrors society’s doubt of the Black woman’s reality.
More than anything, Beyoncé validates the reality that no matter how excellent, polished, or refined Black women present their ideas, thoughts, or convictions in the workplace, there will almost always be external voices suggesting — and sometimes outrightly forcing — them to stifle their voices, shrink themselves or simply be silent. Beyoncé poignantly validates the harsh truth that irrespective of how excellently Black women articulate themselves, it is often not enough.
This portion of the film was so riveting that Ava DuVernay took to Instagram to share her thoughts on some moments revealed in the film.
Still, at the core of the film lies Beyoncé’s unparalleled artistic mastery. The film seamlessly blends music, dance, and cinematography to create a glitzy tapestry of core moments from the world tour that took the summer of 2023, and impacted the economy in a profound way.
As usual, Queen Bey asserts herself as a leader and collaborates with a cadre of visionary artists, including choreographers, costume designers, and a top-notch team to help push her vision forward. The result is a cinematic experience that is both vivid and authentic.
If anything, the film is an expository expression of how the Houston native has perfected her craft, always taking care to make each high-powered performance appear more effortless than the next. The film also reveals that the Renaissance era might just be her best one yet, but such statements are hard to make, especially with a team that is guided by an ever-evolving visionary such as Beyoncé.
