IRS Will Again Offer Saturday Hours To Help Taxpayers Out

Tax Day might have passed, but some taxpayers may still have tax questions—it’s tax law, after all. To help taxpayers resolve outstanding issues and solve problems, the IRS will open IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) on Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Normally, TACs are open on weekdays by appointment. These special Saturday hours in more than 40 locations will provide additional face-to-face assistance for people who need help—no appointment is required. However, some sites may see high demand, and wait times can be longer than usual. To help with this and avoid delays, plan ahead and come prepared with needed information. IRS employees will try to serve as many people as quickly as possible.

“IRS employees worked hard this tax season to provide more help for people, and the Saturday hours helped many taxpayers outside of normal business hours,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “The special Saturday hours this weekend are part of a larger effort underway as we continue to improve and work on transforming the IRS to serve taxpayers and the nation.”

Taxpayer Assistance Centers

The IRS added hundreds of employees to Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the nation following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act last year, and the IRS has reopened or opened more than 25 local TAC offices since last year. The IRS will continue to add more employees at these locations in the months ahead.

Saturday Series

This is the last of four scheduled Saturday opens in 2023 that had been previously announced.

Saturday opens have been popular in past years. According to a TIGTA audit of the previous tax filing season, IRS served 5,217 taxpayers in the 35 TACs that were open on the first two monthly Saturday dates. For the second two Saturdays, they served 5,406 taxpayers at the 40 TACs open on April 9, 2022, and 4,251 taxpayers at the 42 TACs open on May 14, 2022.

A Center Near You

To find a TAC near you, use the IRS office locator tool on the IRS website.

Services

TAC can help if you have questions about a tax bill, IRS audit, or need help resolving a tax problem. If the TAC doesn’t have employees that can help, you will receive a referral.

Taxpayer Advocate Service employees may also be available to help with issues at some locations.

Professional interpretation will be available in many languages through an over-the-phone translation service. For deaf or hard of hearing individuals who need sign language interpreter services, IRS staff will schedule appointments for a later date. Alternatively, you can call TTY/TDD at 800-829-4059 to make an appointment.

What To Bring

If you’re trying to resolve a specific issue, bring the related information, including any correspondence, that you need to resolve your tax issues. In addition, you should bring the following documents:

  • Current government-issued photo identification,
  • Social Security cards or ITINs for you and all members of your household, including your spouse and dependents (if applicable),
  • Any IRS letters or notices received and related documents,
  • For identity verification services, two forms of identification and, if filed, a copy of the tax return for the year in question.

The IRS may also request the following information:

  • A current mailing address,
  • Proof of bank account information included on a tax return to receive payments or refunds by direct deposit.

Tax Prep

It’s important to note that tax return preparation is not a service offered at a TAC. If you’re looking for help with your returns, consider:

  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). To find a VITA or TCE site near you, use the VITA Locator Tool or call 800-906-9887.
  • AARP Tax-Aide. To find an AARP Tax-Aide site near you, use the AARP Site Locator Tool or call 888-227-7669. According to the site, there is no age, income, or AARP Membership requirement.
  • IRS Free File. Any individual or family earning $73,000 or less in 2022 can prepare and file federal income tax returns online using guided tax preparation software. There are products in English and Spanish.
  • MilTax. MilTax is a Department of Defense program that offers free return preparation software and electronic filing for federal tax returns and up to three state income tax returns for all military members, and some veterans, with no income limit.

Services Provided

Not sure whether this is the right forum for you? The IRS Contact Your Local Office page lists all services provided at specific TACs.

You can also visit IRS.gov for online resources that may help resolve some issues without a trip. This information is available in multiple languages.
