Disruption continues on the line between Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith.
A spokesman for Avanti West Coast said: “Please do not attempt to travel with us between Preston and Scotland today.”
The freight train derailed just before 17:00 BST on Wednesday.
TransPennine Express said its services were also affected by the derailment.
A spokesman said: “Due to an extremely limited train service as well as difficulty in sourcing road transport, customers travelling between Preston and Glasgow Central and between Preston and Edinburgh in both directions are advised not to travel.”
Network Rail said they were working to remove the derailed train.
A spokesman added: “Sorry to passengers whose journeys have been impacted while we work to safely reopen the line as quickly as possible.”
