State tax revenue has been a major issue over the past few years, with collections whipsawing from highs to lows thanks to the pandemic, economic uncertainty and many other factors.
Over two-fifths of states saw double-digit jumps in revenue in 2022, according to the latest IRS data, with the top five states boasting an average increase in gross collections of 33.61% in 2022. The combined total revenue collections in these states was more than $185 billion.
