Whether they plan to use an accountant (63%) or prepare their own return (37%), a significant number of Americans procrastinate when it comes to filing their taxes. Almost a fifth (19%) will file in April or later, and 8% will file for an extension.
Why? Procrastinators say that the process is too complicated and stressful; that it takes too much time; that they don’t want to make mistakes; and that they are concerned they will owe money. Whatever the reasons (or excuses), individuals tend to delay more in certain states and cities than others.
The states and cities in this ranking were rated by analyzing 418 Google search terms related to the tax filing deadline from January to September 2023 per 100,000 residents. The landlocked state with the biggest tax procrastinators has held the top spot for two years running, while the harbor city whose residents delay the most in filing has likewise held the No. 1 position for the last two years.
