Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business and the world

The Supreme Court has refused to let Donald Trump immediately fire Lisa Cook, in a pivotal victory for the Federal Reserve governor and the US central bank’s independence.

The court on Wednesday deferred the US president’s application until the justices will hear oral arguments in the case in January 2026.

Trump brought the appeal to the Supreme Court after two lower courts decided to allow Cook to continue working at the Fed while she pursues her case against the US president.

The judgment will assuage the concerns of some of Fed officials that Trump could have used a Supreme Court decision against Cook to fire them too.

Trump tried to fire Cook in August following allegations of mortgage fraud.

The Department of Justice is investigating the allegations, which focus on whether Cook purposefully listed two properties as primary residences. Cook is yet to be charged and has denied the allegations.

The Fed declined to comment on Wednesday, but has previously said it will abide by any court judgments. A lawyer representing Cook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is a developing story
