Amazon operates single largest employer health plan in U.S.

Amazon has about 2.8 million participants in its health plan, making it the biggest single-employer health plan in the United States.

Mark Farrah Associates reported that finding in a new table based on an analysis of employers’ Form 5500 filings. The U.S. Labor Department uses Form 5500 filings to track benefit plan performance.

Amazon’s health plan has more participants than New Mexico has residents, and almost as many participants as Mississippi has residents.

If Amazon’s health plan were a U.S. state, it would be the 37th most populous—and would qualify to have at least three seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

What it means: Amazon has had a hard time achieving its longstanding goal of becoming a major health care and health insurance player, but it has the size to get there.

Other big players: Three of the six biggest health plans in the Mark Farrah rankings are multiemployer plans: the National Education Association Retiree Health Plan, with 2.7 million participants; the health plan managed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with 1.8 million participants; and the American Federation of Teamsters, with 1.3 million participants.

Walmart has the second-biggest single-employer plan, with 1.8 million participants.
FedEx has 1.1 million participants in its plan, AT&T has about 982,000 participants and Target has about 900,000 participants.

Walmart, FedEx, AT&T and Target all have more participants in their plans than Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming have residents.
