Amazon Prime members can now get a 10-cent discount on gas—but need to hand over their data first
ShareShareShareShareShare

The Prime vs. Plus wars are heating up.

Amazon has unveiled a new perk for Amazon Prime members that will let members of its $139 per year loyalty program save 10 cents per gallon on gas at roughly 7,000 BP, Amoco and other stations across the U.S. This comes after Walmart has been offering a similar discount to members of its Walmart+ program for the past four years (at 13,000 locations).

Amazon estimates members will save an average of $70 per year with the new perk—and the company says it plans to add electric vehicle charging savings at BP locations starting sometime next year.

“We’re constantly looking to add more value for Prime members and perhaps the broadest and most popular additional benefit we could offer is fuel savings—we’re excited to give this to Prime members ,” said Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime in a statement.

Here’s all you need to know about the new Prime perk.

How do I sign up for the Amazon Prime 10-cent gas discount?

Assuming you’re already a Prime member, you’ll visit amazon.com/fuelsavings to either sign up for an account with Earnify or link your existing account. This is one of the first times Amazon has linked a Prime account to an outside company.

How do I get the Amazon 10-cent gas discount at the pump?

When it’s time to fill up your car, head to a participating Amoco, BP or ampm gas station. (You can find the one closest to you in the Earnify app.) Enter your phone number at the pump and your discount will be enabled.

Is Amazon’s gas discount a limited-time perk?

No. Amazon has not put any time limit on this new Prime perk. It is expected to be an ongoing benefit, much like free two-day shipping and access to Prime Video.

Are there any catches with Amazon’s 10-cent gas discount?

Nothing major. You’ll be giving some personal information to Earnify, which is owned by BP, but frankly it’s no more than you would if you signed up with the service organically.
