Conservatives and Labour raise £18mn in first quarter
ShareShareShareShareShare

The chair of the UK Statistics Authority has said the election could “do without” parties quoting figures about each other’s policies.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme about Rishi Sunak’s disputed claims that independent Treasury officials’ calculations showed Labour would raise taxes by £2,000 if elected, Sir Robert Chote said “[this] is not great for overall trust in the dialogue.”

He added: “If you’re going to make high-profile numerical claims about things, it’s a good idea to define clearly what it is that you are talking about and you’re trying to measure . . . and you should identify the source of the underlying data.”
