IRS plans extended hours at Taxpayer Assistance Centers during tax season

The Internal Revenue Service said Friday it planned to have extended weekday and Saturday hours this spring through April 30.

The extra hours may be especially needed this year as taxpayers are expected to have many questions and will need extra help with various provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, such as the new tax deductions for tips, overtime income, seniors and car loans. However, the extra hours come amid the plans for closures of at least nine Taxpayer Assistance Centers across the country.

Taxpayers can check whether a nearby TAC is offering extended hours by visiting IRS.gov to use the TAC Locator tool. The tool offers details on office locations, directions, available services, and information about extended hours.

Along with expanded weekday hours, many TACs will also be open on some Saturdays through June 2026 to provide in-person assistance. During these special Saturday hours, taxpayers will be able to access all regularly available TAC services except for making cash payments.

For more information about Saturday hours, visit IRS.gov/SaturdayHours. The IRS is encouraging taxpayers to check the website regularly because the locations of the participating TACs and their availability can change without notice.

During a House Ways and Committee hearing on Wednesday, IRS Commissioner Frank Bisignano was asked if he planned to reopen the closed TACs. A lawmaker cited a January report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration on tax season readiness that described the impact of recent cutbacks at the IRS during and after last fall’s federal government shutdown, noting that 35 of the centers had been closed as of last December.

“During the government shutdown in October 2025, all 362 TAC offices were closed,” said the report. “With the end of the shutdown in November 2025, the TAC offices have reopened. However, the operating status of the TACs can vary day-to-day due to illness, staff leaving, or staff taking other positions within the IRS. Reductions in the number of open TAC offices could potentially result in fewer taxpayers being served during the 2026 Filing Season. As of May 3, 2025, the IRS assisted nearly 1 million taxpayers in-person at a TAC office. Additionally, approximately 27 TAC offices were closed temporarily or were not staffed. As of December 2025, 35 TAC offices are closed.”

Bisignano did not commit to reopening any of the closed centers, but said that service had improved since he started at the IRS in late January. “We are serving more Americans across the board right now,” he said. “This weekend, we had our Taxpayer Experience Day and saw twice as many people as we did last weekend in our taxpayer centers. The taxpayer centers closed before I came on board, I have not closed the taxpayer center since I’ve been here. We’re serving more Americans than we ever have.”
