IRS reminds truckers of looming tax deadline
ShareShareShareShareShare

The Internal Revenue Service is reminding client operators of large trucks and buses that they must file their federal Form 2290, “Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return,” by Sept. 3 for vehicles used in July 2024. (The usual Aug. 31 deadline is delayed a business day because it falls on a Saturday.)

The tax applies to highway vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are registered or legally required to be registered. Truckers must file their 2290 — preferably via e-filing — by the last day of the month following the month in which they first used the vehicle on a public highway during the taxable period regardless of the vehicle’s registration renewal date.

Taxpayers with 25 or more taxed vehicles in their name must e-file a 2290.

The annual taxable period is July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. Among other points:

  • Vehicles first used on a public highway during July 2024 must file a 2290 and pay the tax from July 1 and Sept. 3, 2024. Additional taxable vehicles placed on the road during any month other than July should prorate the tax for the months the vehicle is in service. See this table for filing deadlines.
  • E-filing through a provider in the IRS e-file program for excise taxes creates a valid Schedule 1 once the return is accepted by the IRS.
  • For vehicles with an expected use of 5,000 of fewer miles (7,500 for farm vehicles), a return is required but no tax is due.
