IRS warns businesses to revalidate business tax accounts by July 29
ShareShareShareShareShare

The Internal Revenue Service said this week that “designated officials” need to revalidate their Business Tax Account  by the July 29 deadline in order to maintain access.

Designated Officials who don’t revalidate their accounts by July 29, 2025, will need to request access to the account again, either as a Designated Official or other user type.

Revalidation requires a W-2 for the most recent tax filing year or proof that they can legally bind an entity for tax purposes.

To revalidate, Designated Officials must log in to their BTA account. The service will be temporarily unavailable on July 27 from midnight through 11:00 a.m. ET on July 27 for planned updates, according to the website.

The IRS introduced online Business Tax Accounts in 2023 and added more features last year, such as the ability to pay federal tax deposits and see and make a payment on balances due. The accounts are also now accessible in Spanish, although the IRS reportedly is considering eliminating non-English tax services because of an executive order from President Trump designating English as the official language, according to the Washington Post.

The IRS plans to add more features to the Business Tax Account in the future.  When it’s fully developed, BTA will offer a stronger online self-service tool allowing many types of business taxpayers and other entities to check their tax history, make payments, view notices, authorize powers of attorney and conduct other business with the IRS. However, approximately 25% of IT workers at the IRS have been laid off or departed as a result of workforce reductions since the beginning of the year.
