The US has expanded its blockade of Iranian ports and coastal waters to include all Iranian ships and sanctioned vessels “regardless of location”, according to a US Navy update.
In a notice published on Thursday, US Navy Command said that it would also target ships “suspected of carrying contraband”, such as weapons, ammunition, drones and dual-use machinery and metals destined for use in the conflict, as well as oil exports that would contribute to “Iran’s war-sustaining economy”.
“These vessels, regardless of location, are subject to visit, board, search, and seizure,” it said.
The US naval blockade took effect at 10am Eastern Time on Monday. Since it was implemented, the majority of ships attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz have either stopped or turned around in the Gulf of Oman.
