Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House and a titan of Democratic party politics, will not seek re-election to Congress, ending nearly four decades of public service.
Pelosi, 85, announced her retirement in a video posted to social media on Thursday.
The former Speaker, who has long been seen as among the most influential members of the Democratic party, said she will remain in Congress for one more year.
But she added that she will not seek another two-year term in next year’s midterm elections.
The congresswoman was first elected to represent San Francisco in the US House of Representatives in 1987. She was Speaker of the House from 2007 until 2011, and again from 2019 to 2023.
