The New Jersey Society of CPAs awarded $221,500 in scholarships to 53 local high school and college students at the Pines Manor in Edison.

The award recipients, spread across 13 New Jersey universities and colleges, each received between $2,000 and $6,500. The winners had to be currently in their junior or senior year and entering an accounting-related graduate program. Eighteen high school students, who all plan to major in accounting or obtain a concentration in the field, received $1,500 each.

“We are extremely pleased to be distributing these awards,” said Henrietta Fuchs, president of the NJCPA Scholarship Fund and former scholarship recipient, in a press release. “The scholarship program was not only designed to assist the students financially but also to motivate them to pursue an accounting career.”

Eight of the high school winners and two of the college winners received the Deloitte Foundation NJCPA Scholars Award. Part of a pilot program, the scholarships were created to make the profession more accessible to high school seniors in New Jersey who come from diverse backgrounds and have demonstrated interest in studying accounting. The Deloitte scholarship winners came from six New Jersey high schools, and the two college recipients were from Saint Peter’s University and Seton Hall University.

“It’s rewarding to be among such enthusiastic students who are on their way to becoming our future CPAs and accounting professionals,” said Ralph Albert Thomas, CEO and executive director of the NJCPA, in a statement. “The generosity of our members and firm/company benefactors is unsurpassed.”

The scholarships also included “in-name-of” awards that honor former and current NJCPA members, such as in memory of Howard Bookbinder and Jules C. Frankel, and the Council of Past Presidents awards.
