Tax season is officially over and the final numbers are in. As anticipated, taxpayers made a significant push to file before the deadline, with the number of individual income tax returns received rising by 16.34% in the last week (from 119,592,000 as of April 12 to 139,137,000 as of April 19), according to the Internal Revenue Service filing statistics for the season.

The total number of returns received by April 19 was up by 1.5% on the same period last year, reflecting how taxpayers have been more diligent and faster in filing their returns this year before the deadline compared to last year, especially considering this tax season was seven days shorter (75 in 2024 versus 82 in 2023).

The average direct deposit refund amount continued to remain steady at $2,947, up 4.2% on the same period in 2023.

Scroll through to see the cumulative statistics for the filing season through the week ending April 19, 2024.
