Taxpayers are accessing the IRS website much more this year than last to find the answers they need to file their taxes. The number of visits reached 411,961,000 as of March 15, up 19.3% over the corresponding period in 2023.

Meanwhile, the number of individual income tax returns received to date continues to lag marginally behind last year at -0.4% (71,861,000 in 2023 vs. 71,587,000 in 2024), although this is primarily due to the lower number of actual filing days this tax season (54 versus 47).

With the IRS having processed more than 70 million returns so far this year, the average direct deposit refund amount settled at $3,177 this week, a steady mark consistent with the previous four weeks and up 5.2% on last year.

Scroll through to see the cumulative statistics for the filing season through the week ending March 15, 2024.
