TaxGPT AI agent completes returns from start to finish

AI-focused accounting automations solutions company TaxGPT announced the release of a new tax prep agent that it claims completes returns from start to finish in the manner of a human tax preparer.

Processing Content

It is said to work with all web-based intake, onboarding, tax prep and delivery tools. There is no need for new portals or systems of record. The agent works directly inside whatever software the accountant already uses and is compatible with all web-based intake, onboarding, tax prep and delivery tools.

This is done through browser automation. The agent opens the user’s own tax platform in a browser and operates it the way a human would — things like navigating the interface, entering data, running diagnostics — so no custom per-platform integration is required.

Because it’s controlling the browser UI rather than connecting to a backend API, it works with any software that runs in a browser, explained Kashif Ali, co-founder and CEO, in an email. In a demo video, he showed TaxGPT opening ProConnect and filling fields and navigating menus all on its own until it eventually produced a fully prepared return that he could review.

The AI automatically pulls workpapers like W-2s, 1099s, K-1s and Excel trial balances from either local folders or intake software. When source documents are in a location the agent can access, it opens the tax platform, enters the return data, runs diagnostics and flags anything needing human judgment. Then, the agent hands the return off to another AI — TaxGPT’s return-review agent called Agent Andrew — which then reconciles source documents with the prepared return and surfaces audit-sensitive items for CPA sign-off.

The agent prepares returns without a human needing to touch the keyboard or even mouse while it works. The human does not need to comb through a year’s worth of documents and bank statements and manually input data, nor do they need to be present while the program runs. However, Ali noted, the CPA will need to reconcile items flagged by Agent Andrew and then must themselves carry out the final submission.

“The Tax Prep Agent doesn’t just assist tax professionals — it works alongside them,” said Kashif Ali, CEO and co-founder of TaxGPT. “Firms can now scale their capacity without scaling their headcount, and their people can focus on the judgment calls that actually require a tax professional.”

The Tax Prep Agent is currently optimized for 1040s, with 1065s and 1120s on the roadmap.

He said TaxGPT has already tested and validated that it works on platforms like Intuit ProConnect, ProSeries, TaxSlayer Pro, 360 Systems, Google Drive, SafeSend, HubSync and ShortPrep. UltraTax and Lacerte/SurePrep will also work, but only through the web versions. While the tool right now is primarily browser-based, Ali said they are actively planning to expand into desktop-native and hosted environments, with formal rollout of these capacities expected within the next four weeks. When that happens, it will work on CCH Axcess, UltraTax and Lacerte.

Every customer goes through an onboarding process and has full access to a customer success manager. Ali said most users are able to download and start using same-day. Right now, pricing is subscription-based.
