Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business and the world

US President Donald Trump has invited Vladimir Putin to the “Board of Peace” overseeing Gaza, the Kremlin said on Monday.

Dmitry Peskov, the Russian president’s spokesperson, told reporters that Russia is “studying all details of the offer” and “hopes for discussions with Washington to go over all the nuances”, according to RIA Novosti.

The apparent offer indicates that Trump is eager to maintain his warm relationship with Putin even as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nears its fourth anniversary and Moscow plays hardball over a US-backed peace plan.

Washington has sent out invitations to heads of state and government to join a “Board of Peace”, which Trump will chair. Countries that join the board will serve a limited three-year term unless they contribute more than $1bn within the first year of its operations, according to the text of its charter.

This board will sit above an advisory body that will include former UK prime minister Sir Tony Blair, private equity boss Marc Rowan and the US president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The US embassy in Moscow did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is a developing story
