Welcome to the Financial Times’ live coverage of US elections, with voters in more than 30 states casting their ballots on roles as local as school board governors and as prominent as judges, mayors and governors.
Among the most-watched races will be in New York City, where Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani has tapped popular discontent with inflation — and whose fate in the election will shape his party’s politics as they search for a message to oppose Donald Trump.
But among the hundreds of polls taking place, races in four other states — California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia — have national significance.
The results will shed some light on the political mood of the country a year after Trump won a second presidential term.
Democrats hope they show a swing by voters back to the party, especially with governorships up for grabs in New Jersey and Virginia.
Republicans hope electors will give a new seal of approval to the president’s agenda, from his trade wars to immigration crackdown.
Both parties want to build some momentum a year out from the 2026 midterm elections, when control of the upper and lower houses of Congress will be at stake.
