More than £2m has been made available for families struggling in the cost-of-living crisis.

People struggling to pay for energy and other essentials are being encouraged to check if they are eligible before applying to Herefordshire Council for a share of the fund.

The authority said the government had provided £2.3m. Residents could use the money to get help with paying for energy and water, as well as food, clothing and hygiene products.

It is one of several schemes supporting people through the cost-of-living crisis, the council said, with other schemes available for carers, care leavers, pensioners and others.

People using high-energy medical equipment can also get help.

The cash was provided after the Household Support Fund, funded by the Department for Work and Pensions, was extended for a further year.

Carole Gandy, cabinet member for adults, health and wellbeing, said the authority understood times were hard for many and “sometimes it’s difficult to make ends meet”.

She said: “We are committed to ensuring that our most vulnerable residents receive the support they need.”
